Maternity

Maternity services

Maternity services in Trafford are now provided by Wythenshawe Hospital and Saint Mary’s Hospital, following the closure of our maternity unit on 1 February 2010. You will still be cared for by former Trafford maternity staff, however, as they transferred to Wythenshawe and Saint Mary’s Hospitals when our unit closed.

Both hospitals offer antenatal clinics at Trafford General Hospital for women who prefer to be seen there. They also provide antenatal, postnatal and diagnostics care (e.g. ultrasounds) in Trafford. You can choose to give birth at home or in hospital at Wythenshawe, Saint Mary’s or another unit of your choice.

Gynaecology services at this Trust, including our early pregnancy advisory service, are not affected by the closure of the maternity unit.

If you are pregnant, you can refer yourself to a midwife – you do not need to see your GP first. Just call the free Direct to Midwife helpline on 0800 121 4400 and you will be put through to your local midwifery service so you can arrange an appointment with a midwife.

Trafford Maternity Unit – 1946-2010

The maternity unit at Trafford General Hospital closed on 1 February 2010 as part of the Making it Better changes to maternity and children’s services across Greater Manchester. The decision was made by primary care trusts in Greater Manchester in December 2006, following extensive public consultation.

Chloe Cooper with baby OscarThe last baby born in our maternity unit was Oscar Cooper from Sale, who arrived at 4.11am on Tuesday 26 January 2010 weighing 7lbs 4oz. Oscar’s mum Chloe Cooper, 30, said: “He is our first baby and it’s an amazing feeling to finally see him. We knew the maternity unit here at Trafford General was closing and we were really glad we made it in because it’s a lovely unit and if Oscar had arrived on his due date he would have been born in another hospital. It’s excellent that we were able to have him here and very special that he is the last baby who will be born on the unit.”

Staff from the Trafford maternity unit transferred to the unit of their choice at either Wythenshawe or Saint Mary’s, where they continue to care for Trafford women and their babies. Some long-standing members of the maternity team retired when the unit closed. In total, they had worked in Trafford for an incredible 240 years and in the NHS for 296 years.
