Public invited to tell Trafford's hospitals how to measure quality of care

March 8th, 2010

Patients, relatives and the general public can tell the health trust that runs Trafford’s hospitals how it should measure quality of care at an event next Wednesday (17 March).

The informal drop-in event, called ‘Quality: What Matters to You?’, is open to everyone with an interest in the services provided by Trafford Healthcare NHS Trust at Trafford General, Altrincham General and Stretford Memorial Hospitals and in the community. It will take place at St Matthew’s Church Hall, Chester Road, Stretford from 10.30am-1.30pm.

The Trust, which was rated Medium-Sized Hospital Trust of the Year in the recent Dr Foster Hospital Guide, wants people’s views on how it should measure and report its performance on the safety and effectiveness of the care it provides, as well as patients’ views on their experience of being seen and treated there.

The feedback will help the Trust set local priorities for the new Quality Account that all hospital trusts will be publishing later this year.

People attending the ‘Quality: What Matters To You?’ event will be able to take part in discussion groups about how hospitals should be measured, see sample Quality Accounts and give feedback on them, and meet key figures from the Trust including Chief Executive Ron Calvert and Medical Director Dr Simon Musgrave. There will also be surveys asking what people feel are the key factors when it comes to hospital quality.

Dr Simon Musgrave, Medical Director at the TrustDr Simon Musgrave (pictured right), Medical Director at the Trust, said: “People have a right to know how well their local hospitals are performing on safety, the effectiveness of the care they provide and how patients feel about the treatment they receive. This event will help us make sure that our new Quality Account contains information that people find useful and relevant. We hope lots of people will come along and tell us what they think on 17 March.”

Ann Day, Chair of Trafford Local Involvement Network (LINk) for health and social care, said: “Trafford LINk is encouraging residents to attend this event. It is important that the public are consulted and listened to so that their views and experiences of hospital care can influence any changes needed to the quality of that care. Patients’ priorities may be very different to those set nationally by the Department of Health. Trafford residents have an opportunity to say to senior managers at Trafford Healthcare what really matters to them. Don’t miss this opportunity.”

‘Quality: What Matters To You’ takes place from 10.30am-1.30pm on Wednesday 17 March at St Matthew’s Church Hall, Chester Road, Stretford, M32 8HF. Refreshments will be provided. Please call 0161 746 2019 for more information or to reserve your place.

• If you can’t come along to the event, you can give your views by completing an online survey at www.trafford.nhs.uk/get-involved/quality-what-matters-to-you.
