Trust Chair reappointed for further term

February 8th, 2010

Trafford Healthcare NHS Trust is pleased to announce that Fay Selvan has been reappointed Chair of the Board.

Fay has chaired the Trust, which runs Trafford’s hospitals, for the past four years and has steered it through a period of rebuilding and continual improvement, culminating in the accolade of being named Medium-Sized Hospital Trust of the Year 2009 by the Dr Foster Hospital Guide.

Having overseen the establishment of a stable and experienced management team at the Trust, Fay will now be integral in its proposed move towards providing integrated care. This would involve hospital staff working much more closely with GPs and community health services to improve care for patients.

Trust Chair Fay SelvanFay said she was delighted to have been reappointed Chair and was looking forward to taking the Trust to the next stage of developing an integrated care system in Trafford with local GPs and the healthcare-providing arm of Trafford Primary Care Trust.

“When I joined the Trust there were a number of challenging issues to deal with, both clinically and financially,” she said, “and I felt my most important task was to establish a stable and effective management team which could tackle these head-on. We now have a team that is more than capable of driving both quality of care and financial efficiency and our greatly-improved performance has seen well-deserved recognition with us being named Medium-Sized Hospital Trust of the Year by Dr Foster.

“We can still go further, however, and my top priority now is leading our potential transformation to an integrated care system that will deliver real quality for Trafford patients through much closer working between hospitals, community health services, GPs and social care. The future is bright for this Trust and I am thrilled to continue to be a part of it.”

Trafford Healthcare NHS Trust provides district general hospital services at Trafford General Hospital, Altrincham General Hospital, Stretford Memorial Hospital and in the community.

Fay was originally appointed Chair of the Trust in January 2006 for a four-year term, having previously been Chair of Trafford North Primary Care Trust. She is the Chief Executive of the Big Life Group of charities and social businesses, which provides services to people with mental health problems, drug addictions and people that face other barriers. She has previously worked in both a local authority and the NHS.

Her reappointment as Chair of Trafford Healthcare NHS Trust is for a four-year term from 15 January 2010 to 14 January 2014 and she will receive a salary of £20,896 per annum – the amount set by the Secretary of State for Health for chairs of band 2 NHS trusts in 2009/10.

Fay’s reappointment has been made by the Appointments Commission in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments’ Code of Practice. All non-executive appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Fay has no political activity to declare and does not hold any other ministerial appointments.
