Detailed proposals for Altrincham's new hospital

February 12th, 2010

Bidders competing for the contract to build a new hospital in Altrincham have submitted their detailed proposals to Trafford Healthcare NHS Trust.

The Trust, which runs Trafford’s hospitals, wants to replace Altrincham General Hospital with a new building better suited to modern healthcare needs. The new hospital will deliver all the same services as Altrincham General and will be on one of three possible sites in the town centre. The much-loved historic facade of the old hospital will be preserved.

Three separate consortia – Citybranch Limited, Nikal Community Solutions Limited and VINCI Construction UK Limited – are in the running for the hospital contract, which will be awarded later this spring.

Citybranch Limited wants to build the hospital on a site it owns on Railway Street, Nikal Community Solutions wants to build it on the Altair site behind Altrincham’s main transport interchange, and VINCI Construction UK Limited wants to rebuild it on the existing hospital site.

The bidders submitted their initial proposals (known as ‘outline solutions’) last summer and went on public exhibition in September. Patients, health staff and the public were also invited to give their views. This information was then fed back to the bidders so they could adapt and update their proposals before submitting their ‘detailed solutions’ to the Trust by 1 February.

The Trust will now evaluate these detailed solutions and, after clarifying any outstanding issues, invite some or all of the bidders to submit final tenders. A preferred bidder will be selected in the spring and their proposal will go on public exhibition. It is expected that construction work will begin later this year and that the new hospital will open in 2012.

Tristram Reynolds, Director of Estates at the Trust, said: “This is an exciting and long-awaited development for Altrincham. We are making good progress and are on course to select our preferred bidder, as planned, this spring.”
