Current issues affecting travel to our hospitals - Children's Hospital, Eye Hospital, MRI and St Mary's

To coincide with the University's need to temporarily close Oxford Road as part of its campus investment, Transport for Greater Manchester will also start the next phase of its bus priority work in the area.

This will include installing the first section of segregated 'Dutch style' cycle lanes between Hathersage Road and Denmark Road. This work will tie in with the already constructed bus stop cycle bypass and the new pedestrian and cycle facilities in front of Whitworth Park. During the work only outbound vehicular traffic flows will be possible past the work site, starting from 23 May for two weeks.

This TfGM Oxford Road Bus Priority Scheme schedule looks at the period beginning Monday 4th July through to 25thJuly. As with any major engineering project, there may be changes to the schedule.

There will be a full road closure between Moss Lane East and Denmark Road over the weekends of the 16/17 and 23/24 July. This is to enable essential resurfacing work. Here is a copy of the traffic management plan for these works, showing their extent and the signed diversionary routes.

  • Grafton Street car park is currently undergoing major refurbishment and expansion. Spaces are still available in this car park but are limited. An alternative multi-story car park is available at the Upper Brook Street/Hathersage Road junction of our site but we would advise using public transport if at all possible.

Free cross-site bus

We are currently running a free electric shuttle bus around the central site, taking patients and visitors from the two main car parks at Grafton Street and Hathersage Road from the car park entrance to their hospital door. This currently operates during daytime hours only; look out for the yellow bus stops and mini electric bus.

Our Oxford Road site is very well served by buses. Twenty different routes from across Manchester all stop directly here, including our own hybrid bus (the 147) which costs £1.50 for a day ticket and travels from Manchester Piccadilly Train Station via the Universities, stopping on site. The First Bus 18 Service from Langley stops on the Boulevard close to all main hospital entrances.

Click the link below to download a summary of all buses which stop here, including estimated travel time and weekend/evening frequency.

Park and Ride

We recognise that people come from all over Manchester to our hospitals, and access by car can often be difficult. With this in mind we have two 'Park and Ride' locations from which you can take a free shuttle bus to the main hospital site and then walk or catch a 5 minute bus down Oxford Road to the Dental Hospital.

These are located at Belle Vue (Showcase Cinema) (map) and at Trafford General Hospital (map).

Belle Vue Shuttle Times

The Belle Vue shuttle runs from 10am to 3pm, Monday to Friday. It departs from in front of the Showcase Cinema heading towards our main site on Oxford Road (and returns) approximately every 15 minutes.

Trafford Shuttle Times

The Trafford General Hospital shuttle runs from 10am to 3pm, Monday to Friday. It departs from the main entrance of Trafford General Hospital towards our central site on Oxford Road (and returns) approximately every 30 minutes.

We are around 1 mile from the nearest motorway junction and are accessible by car. Note that the roads surrounding our site will face disruption over the next few years due to works associated with the Bus Priority Package.
